Honors Reading Program 2013-2014

Cecil Sly Elementary

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Cecil Sly Elementary is excited to offer a new incentive-based reading program for the 2013-14 school year.  Every student in our school will have the chance to earn the title of Honors Reader. The criteria for this award include accumulating a minimum number of points in the Accelerated Reader system, 120 points for 4th and 5th graders, and 80 points for 2nd and 3rd graders.  The books read to accumulate those points need to fall within several different categories and will be recorded and approved through the school librarian, Mrs. Clark.  After earning the title of Honors Reader, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will get their choice of a brand-new skateboard or bicycle.  Kindergartners and First Graders will also participate in a different format and will earn medals.

For second through fifth graders, please understand this program is reading-intensive and takes a strong commitment.  We encourage ANY student who wants to participate to sign up.  We will monitor and guide them through the process but they need to do the reading and testing individually.  Audio books and books read to the student will not be allowed.  To qualify for the list, books must be in or above the student’s ZPD range, (i.e., their reading level) which will be determined within the first 10 days of school.

For Kindergartners and 1st Graders, reading logs will be sent home with students.  Time read aloud either to or by the student will count.  Students may earn 1 point per day for a minimum of 15 minutes.  Parents will verify this time with their signature.  Medals will be awarded when 75 points are accumulated.  At the end of the school year, there will be additional prizes for the 3 students with the highest overall number of points.

We look forward to a wonderful year and hope to be able to award many Honors Readers.  If you have any questions, please contact our librarian, Mrs. Clark at 541-447-7675.

Your Principal,

Jim Bates
