A River Keepers storyline approach was selected in the spring of 2014 as a focal point of in-class and field based programs to highlight the integration of elementary students into the new Barnes Butte Elementary school that will open in the fall of 2015.

A watershed based theme was chosen due to the fact that Ochoco and Crooked River Elementary schools will be closed when this transition period is complete. This River Keeper Storyline concept has been integrated in all elementary classrooms during the 2014-15 school year. This week’s field event presented every K-5 elementary student the opportunity to visit the water body their grade adopted for their Storyline. Grade 5 – Prineville Reservoir; Grade 4 – Ochoco Reservoir; Grade 3 – Crooked River; Grade 2- McKay Creek; Grade 1- Ochoco Creek; and Kindergarten – the Children’s Fishing Pond.

Topics presented during the field days included: Water quality, pollution, macro-invertebrates, puzzle murals, big scale and micro scale artwork, and watershed stewardship activities.

Numerous volunteers from the community contributed to a successful event.
